Frequently-Asked Questions

Will I have to read outside of class?

Yes. Except for texts that are meant to be read aloud (ie. plays), class time will not generally be given for reading. When reading is given for homework, you should expect a reading check. If you skip the reading, your grade will reflect that choice.

In addition to our class texts, reading for enjoyment is one of the best ways you can support your own growth. Students in my Honors classes will complete an independent reading project each marking period.

Can I use plot summaries or online study guides to help with my reading?

Yes, as long as you read them in addition to the original text. It’s ok to find our class texts challenging, but using the internet to avoid reading or find homework answers are forms of cheating. Furthermore, it is impossible to understand, analyze, discuss, or write about a text you have not read, and your grade will suffer in the long term.

If you are looking for reliable study guides to support your work in my class, I DO NOT recommend Wikipedia, GradeSaver, or Quizlet. The sites linked below are written by English teachers and can be trusted for accurate summaries and literary analysis:

Will I have to do oral presentations in your class?

Yes. Almost everyone dislikes public speaking, but it is an important skill, and we will support each other as we practice. You will be expected to give formal/ informal presentations, take a role when we read aloud, serve as Speaker during group assignments, etc.

What is your late work policy?

Assignments are due on Google Classroom by the end of Homeroom (7:50am) on their due date; after that time, work is considered late.

  • If an assignment is worth a quiz/ test grade, a -10 point penalty will be applied for each day of lateness.

  • Late homework or classwork is not accepted.

  • In some cases, missing work may be accepted for partial credit - see me to discuss.

Can I have an extension on this assignment?
Yes! Of course I understand that life happens. If you need an extension, please see me outside of class. (Extensions may not be requested the day before an assignment is due - plan ahead.)

What if I’m absent?

If you miss class, check Google Classroom for assignments you missed. If you miss a quiz or test, you are expected to make it up the day you return to school.

Can I do extra credit to raise my grade?

I do not offer extra credit assignments. The best way to earn a good grade in my class is through consistent, quality work.

However, I do sometimes award bonus points or homework passes as prizes in class!

When can I use the restroom/ get a drink?

If you do need to leave the room during class, please wait until independent work time.

  • Only one person out at a time - check to see if the hall pass is available.

  • Sign the in/ out sheet and take the pass with you.

  • Replace the pass and sign back in when you return.

  • Per school policy, absences longer than 10 minutes constitute a cut.
